Papal crime and punishment on Showtimes’s The Borgias
Wednesday, April 6, 2011 | 9:59 pm
After the very successful, super-sexy period drama The Tudors went off the air in 2010, it was only a matter of time before Showtime filled its gap with similar fare. The Borgias follows the historically corrupt Spanish Borgia family as they bribe their way to the papacy and kill to stay there, but Sunday’s premiere was tepid and slow-paced compared to the years we’ve spent with the Tudor dynasty.

Bravo airs predictable Top Chef finale, releases equally predictable new schedule
Friday, April 1, 2011 | 2:16 am
After months of chopping and braising and amuse bouche-ing, Top Chef All-Stars went out with a whimper last night in a predictable yet karmically satisfying season finale. $200,000 went to the winner, but the new Top Chef isn’t the only one celebrating – Bravo announced an ambitious 2011-2012 lineup with 11 series pickups on the same day. An impressive feat for sure, but further reading shows that each series on the roster sounds suspiciously akin to a variety of shows that Bravo has already aired.

Showtime’s Shameless goes out with a bang, leaves me wanting more.
Monday, March 28, 2011 | 9:24 pm
The finale of Showtime’s strangely addicting Shameless aired last night, capping off a whimsical season filled with Gallagher misadventures that included baby stealing, old lady kidnapping, stolen cars, and golden showers, to name a few.
The first few episodes of the dramedy featured far too much drunken William H. Macy rambling and Emmy Rossum gyrating for my liking, but the show found its heart and captured mine once it took the focus off of the completely unlikeable and incoherent Frank and devoted its efforts to the fabulous cast of Gallagher siblings. I disappeared.
Thursday, March 10, 2011 | 4:24 amHello loyal remote hogs. I’ve disappeared off the face of the Earth, as recent freelance opportunities coupled with the demands of a full time job and a super-long parental visit have left me with not enough time to devote to this lovely project.
To think, the last time I wrote here Charlie Sheen was just that crazy guy who locked a porn star in a Plaza Hotel bathroom!
That being said, I have some sexy updates planned for this weekend. Get ready for some Justified, and Biggest Loser dirt. Oh, and did I mention that I have tickets to see the gang from Community at Paley Fest next week?
I’ll do my best to get a question or two answered from the gang, but either way I’m excited to hear the scoop and share it with you.
Until then, I leave you with the latest video from Donald Glover’s alter ego, Childish Gambino.

Valentine’s Day Winners and Losers
Sunday, February 13, 2011 | 2:16 amWelcome to the time of year when window displays shine with red and pink, when kids and adults alike munch on chalky little candies with sexual innuendos scribed on their heart shaped surface, and when all of your favorite shows insist on doing Valentine’s themed episodes.
Many of my Tivo’d favorites celebrated the holiday this week – some for better, some for worse. I’d like to give a shoutout to Big Love, Justified, and Top Chef for being my only reprieve from unrequited crushes and awkward sexual tension.
To get in the spirit while I wait for my boyfriend to pick me out something awesome, I thought I’d examine this years V-Day specials to determine where Cupid hit his mark, and where he failed miserably, leaving only heartbreak and the all-too-familiar sting of unmet expectations in his wake.

Community 2.14- Advanced Dungeons and Dragons
Saturday, February 5, 2011 | 8:32 pm
NBC’s Thursday night lineup had another solid week, but one show in particular slayed me like a dragon of Draconis with its quick wit and severely budgeted creativity. After a couple of comparatively weak episodes, Community gave us another one of its very super-special ‘special episodes’, this time tackling the extreme nerd-core Dungeons and Dragons subculture. Thankfully, unlike the imaginative but dull Christmas claymation special, this one was actually hysterical. It was easily my favorite episode of this season, and, like the ‘Bottle Episode,’ showed us that the most fun you can have at Greendale comes from sitting around a table with this study group.

Why, Andy Cohen? Why?
Friday, February 4, 2011 | 6:26 am
Looks like I’m going to have to wait until spring to get my satchels of gold from the New York cast. After teasing a February 15th premiere date, Bravo has decided to push back the New York launch until spring, to make way for some saucy ladies from Miami.
Look, I’m all for new Real Housewives franchises- Beverly Hills was phenomenal- but why would you tease me with promises of impending Kelly Bensimon malapropisms and then cruelly snatch them away? I’m looking at you, Andy Cohen. First you skip the important questions on Beverly Hills reunion part 2 (what the heck does ‘you stole my house’ mean?), and now this? I’m going to need a Camille cocktail tonight.

Giving Lights Out a “Fair Shot”
Wednesday, February 2, 2011 | 2:52 am
Is anyone else watching FX’s new Tuesday night offering, Lights Out? Apparently the teen pregnancy-inspiring monster hit Teen Mom is to blame for its low ratings (see the president of FX’s complaints here), but the first few episodes show a lot of promise, and I’m hoping this one doesn’t go the way of my beloved Terriers.
First off, please ignore the ad campaign. Though the billboards on Sunset Blvd. show a bruised and bloodied giant with a thirst for blood, the show isn’t a rags to riches boxing tale. What we see is the story after the story; the former hero, Patrick “Lights” Leary, is reduced to emceeing senior citizen bingo tournaments to support his wife and three daughters.
He reluctantly left the ring years ago, fulfilling a promise he made to his wife, and so far the only punches thrown have been delivered to men that Lights is being paid to intimidate. The quiet and self-contained Lights is definitely clinging to straws to maintain his family’s upper middle class New Jersey lifestyle, and getting in deep with the IRS and the Jersey mafia is putting him in a very tough corner.
His manager/brother and trainer/father have his back, but Lights is the type of guy that refuses to let anyone else take any weight off of his shoulders. The seemingly simple solution would be to put on his gloves and fight his former rival, who is calling for a rematch on TV, but doing so may mean losing the family he lives and breathes for. Lights is the type of guy who is so strong willed and full of pride that he’ll probably end up unintentionally screwing everything up, so this potentially life-shattering dilemma is only going to get better as the season goes on.
It’s gritty, well-acted, and boasts actors like Stacy Keach and The Wire alum Pablo Schreiber (Nick from the docks!). It also takes place in Jersey, the sexiest state in the United States, and next week there is going to be MMA fighting! Give this one a shot, guys.

Thursday Night Comedy Power Rankings – 1/27/11
Sunday, January 30, 2011 | 12:32 amNBC may have just made the switch to a crappy and unoriginal new logo that I think my middle school cousin made in his beginner’s graphic design class, but its Thursday night comedies had another phenomenal week. None of these shows bring in the ratings or the t-shirt/book/mug/lunchbox sales that other NBC “Must-See-TV” (RIP classic slogan) alumni did, but the more I watch shows like Parks and Recreation and Community , the more I realize how much better they are.
You can fight me for these words if you like. Send me a message and I’ll tell you where I work. I dare you to show up. But I truly believe that the consistent quirkiness of some of these characters, coupled with their often unexplainable likability, makes this new generation a lot more fun than their predecessors. Did anyone on Friends have a super-sexy Swanson mustache, or the know-how to build a giant pajamas-only fort encompassing an entire college dorm? I don’t think so.
So this week my power rankings are based on the performances of the characters I’ve grown to love over the last couple of years. Who brought their A-game and saved a government department while running a 104 degree fever, and who spent most of their episode hiding in their car?
